The Connection Project is a cross-sector initiative bringing together major banks, telecoms providers, broadcasters, charities and policymakers to ensure the UK’s shift to digital services happens in a way that works for everyone. Connected, their second report, sets out the case for coordinated action across five key areas — from connectivity to practical support — and shows industry and government what a well-managed transition looks like in practice.
Having seen our work for both global and national clients such as the World Trade Organization, Citizens Advice and International Sustainability Carbon Certification, The Connection Project team contacted nim design to bring a fresh creative approach to its second major report, Connected.
Connected needed to persuade a demanding audience — ministers, regulators, chief executives and journalists — while remaining accessible to a general reader. The report’s argument builds across chapters, so the design needed to carry readers through a sustained case rather than a series of standalone sections: clear signposting, confident use of data, and a visual language serious enough for a ministerial desk but human enough to keep the argument grounded in real people’s lives.
Turning complex data into clear communication
We began with a strategic client workshop, sharing our recommended design approach alongside reflections on the draft copy. The Connection Project’s central mission that “everyone should be able to live well in a digital society” became an important principle for the design. Our approach was therefore deliberately accessible, human and intuitive.
Designing for busy audiences
With the design parameters agreed and the copy structure shaped with the team, we created a bold, vibrant concept—using a graphic link to connect the report, together with clear signposting and a visual language strong enough to engage multiple audiences. Knowing that they were time-poor, we designed the document so readers could:
- Quickly identify the most important messages
- Navigate complex information intuitively
- Understand data without having to work too hard
- Dip in and out of the report while still getting the bigger picture.
We adhered to The Connection Project brand guidelines, pushing boundaries to deliver a warmer, more human look and feel compared with the more ‘academic’ style of their first report. The result is a dynamic piece of work which is easy on the eye and simple to digest.

Testimonial
We are proud of this report and received this testimonial from the Chair of The Connection Project, Natalie Ceeney CBE:
“Working with nim design was a pleasure. They combined creativity with strong project management and accuracy, which was critical given how many stakeholders’ input we had to manage. We are really pleased with the final report, which has been very well received.”
